Episode 74 - Sword of the Stars: The Pit

This is episode 74 of Roguelike Radio, where we discuss Sword of the Stars: The Pit. Talking this episode are KawaiDragoness, Eben Howard and TorNis.

You can download the mp3 of the podcast, play it in the embedded player below, or you can follow us on iTunes.

Topics discussed:
 - Tornis' work livestreaming Sword of the Stars: The Pit (and beating it on Insane Mode), and other roguelikes he's played
 - What makes SotS: The Pit different?
 - Finding recipes: using wiki/spoilers, finding and deciphering messages in-game, or trial and error
 - Using messages/recipes gained from one run to inform another
 - Gripes on recipes not reusing items - annoying or part of the balance?
 - Favourite classes, classes as characters, voice acting
 - Upcoming Downloadable Content: more characters, transferable items and experience
 - Are there many strategies to beat the game, or One True Strategy?
 - Adapting to the game's cruelty
 - Least favourite enemies
 - Mines, using skills to gain experience
 - Good and bad about graphics/sound and UI - cohesiveness, visible hunger, quick-use slots, balance of horror and humour
 - Gripes: Eben has issues with the identification system, Kawa dislikes item destruction traps
 - Is downloadable content always a good thing?

Join us next time on Roguelike Radio for discussion of Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, and its new Kickstarter.

  1. Good episode! But the file I got over RSS only has audio on the left channel. The version on the web is fine. I wonder how that happened. Could be on my side, but it's unlikely since the other podcasts I get over RSS are fine.

I liked Kawa's job as the host, and the discussion between the three flowed easily and was informative. Tornis's deep knowledge of the game was good fodder for an episode as well. A bit of an introduction to the game at the start would have been nice, though. Instead they jump straight in and start talking about Tornis's exploits and experiences, which is lacking context for people who haven't played the game.

    1. Thank you for thinking I was a better host than I was feeling ;) The lack of introduction was partially due to that (and it just being a long time since we'd done a game-specific episode, thus me forgetting how to format those properly).

Audio issues were on our end and should be fixed now!

  2. Excellent episode! I'm quite a fan of the excellent work TorNis does showcasing various games to the utmost on his channel, and find himself and Lethalfrag to be among the very best content producers on Twitch.tv.

I'd love to see the both of them, or at least one, on the podcast along a similar line as this one when the grand new edition of Binding of Isaac comes out later this year---as each surely would have as good an insight on Isaac(Frag perhaps the most just from the time that the dev Edmund and his wife actually called into the stream and talked about it all at length) TorNis surely does on The Pit.

  3. I liked the episode overall, but you guys really shouldn't assume your listeners have played the game before discussing it, especially for a paid game. Next time just spend 5 minutes or so in the beginning giving an overview.

I like to write roguelike(s), but I don't have a lot of time to play them. Thanks!

    1. This is especially important for non-free games.

    2. You're absolutely right. We were all so excited about it that we forgot not everyone had experience with it!

    3. +1 to that, I sort of haven't got a clue what they were talking about :/

  4. Hey a new crew. Nice. Mix it up Darren!

I like this game quite a bit, just bought it. I live that I can pick it up and play. I was off of roguelikes since burning myself out on the 7DRL and subsequent reviews. I tried to play some other genres...it seems most genres are huge grinding skinner box time sucks. I tried Call of Duty, Starcraft and Terraria. I feel like I wasted parts of my life for no lasting satisfaction.

Should I beat this game though...TOTAL SATISFACTION GUARANTEED!!! Oh, and it's actually beatable, unlike the games above.

Buy it in a bundle, it's a pretty good deal. At least two of the other games look pretty solid.
